Bikes on trains in Catalonia

Every route we sell starts or ends at a train station, so this is the first thing to understand. Last checked: October 2026. Rules and services change, so confirm before you travel.

Rodalies (commuter trains, such as the R3)

Renfe says complete bikes travel free on Rodalies without a reservation. The conditions are set by the Generalitat de Catalunya, and Renfe does not publish how many bike spaces each train has.

Regional trains (such as Girona to Barcelona)

On Regional trains a complete bike is free without a seat reservation. Trains marked “Admet bicicleta sense reserva” take bikes this way. Some services offer a “Tren+bici” add-on that gives you a seat next to the bike.

The space is limited. If the train is full, a bike may not be able to board. Bikes must be secured on board.

FGC trains (such as Monistrol de Montserrat)

FGC runs the line to Monistrol de Montserrat and has its own bike rules. Check them on the FGC website before you travel.

Lines that have had problems

  • R3 (Barcelona, Vic, Ripoll, Puigcerdà): the service was suspended at the end of January 2026. The section between Ribes de Freser and Puigcerdà was restored on 6 July 2026. On 30 July 2026 a power failure at Planoles interrupted the line for about two hours.
  • R15 (Reus, Falset, Móra la Nova): resumed on 4 May 2026, with 4 trains a day in each direction plus replacement buses.

How we plan around it

  • We choose stations on lines with frequent service wherever we can.
  • Each route pack gives a plan B, such as a bus or a nearby station.
  • Avoid peak times, such as Friday and Sunday afternoons, when bike space is most likely to run out.
